Which White is Right?

How to Choose the right white for your interior

Large modern room, with white walls and a white sofa, decorated with black and white paintings, black and white side tables some woodshelves and terracotta tiles add warmth to the room. How to chose the correct white to paint your walls

When it comes to interior design some people think white is the safe choice or worse, boring. I beg to differ. There are many reasons as to why someone would choose white… So, how do you create that luxurious interior using the colour white? And what shade of white to use?

First of all, what is the colour white? Well, there are multiple shades and each one creates a different type of effect in an interior space. For Example:

01. Chalk White

You should use this when wanting to create extreme neutrality and not show any hint of colour. The chalk tone is perfect for an all-white interior, especially a space that is full of natural light. The cold tones in the paint allow the lighting to contrast and create a warm and cosy feeling space.

02. Aged White

This type of white is great if you want to create a rich and cosy space. The cream tones exude comfort and are ideal for a bedroom or living room. This shade is also great for North facing rooms as they are often darker and colder in nature, meaning that the warmth of the white can lift the space.

03. Grey-ish White

You should use this when wanting to create extreme neutrality and not show any hint of colour. The chalk tone is perfect for an all-white interior, especially a space that is full of natural light. The cold tones in the paint allow the lighting to contrast and create a warm and cosy feeling space.

04. Why Use White?

White is timeless, if you went back and looked at interiors varying across multiple decades you are likely to find a good deal of white. It never ages. So, if you are after a space that you will never get bored of– use white. You can add colours that can easily be swapped out by choosing decorative pieces like throws, pillows, vases or even plants. I’m a plant fanatic, so I may be slightly biased…but there is nothing better than the combination of clean white walls and lots of greenery.

Top Tip

A great way to make a small space appear bigger is by painting the walls white. The colour reflects the light in the space similar to the way that a mirror does, making the room feel larger than it actually is. You’ll have your very own optical illusion. Pure or brilliant white is the ideal shade of white to use because it contains little to no pigment which allows the light to bounce back off it.

05. Important Things
to Note

All-white interior spaces are very in right now. If you want to create something similar, then it is important to introduce multiple textures. Nobody wants their interior to appear flat. Why not add a white textured wallpaper or tile? How about white textured materials such as waffled blankets. Also, use varying shades of white from rich ivories to cold greyish tones. The combination will keep the space interesting and bright.
